Cut and polished to a single terminated point, the stone shows its color zoningpaler at the base, deepening toward the tip. Mohs 7; lasting sun exposure can lighten the violet. The name comes from the Greek amethystos, not intoxicated; the Greeks carved drinking vessels from it and it has been the February birthstone for centuries.
