Inlaid on this is a silver shield shaped escutcheon

and the stock and metalwork was varnished at some point

except near the crosguard

Normally, mismatched serial numbers on a Colt pistol are a reason to look away, however the U. S. stamped on the left side of the frame indicates that this is in fact an "Artillery Model", officially known as an "Altered Model" by the U. S. War department.
