They are used for crushing different ingredients, such as sesame seeds in Japanese cooking. The Suribachi is a pottery mortar with a single mouth. It is also recommended for making your favourite sauce and dressing. Both the glaze on the outside and the shaving inside the bowl are manually crafted by artisans. The Surikogi is a pestle made
