She initially trained at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, then with Walter Osborne and William Orpen and also in Paris. She was elected an honorary member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1966. She was an active republican, member of Cumann na mBan, was politically active during the Irish war of independence, worked alongside her husband in the running of The Dublin
